Nine

Stepping outside my rooms for the first evening in a few days revealed the truth about the status of things in the compound. The tension was everywhere and I could tell from the way everyone was moving around that they thought something bad was going to happen.

Was this a new thing, or had I just been blind to what was truly going on? I didn't think I'd want the answer to that question.

I tried to keep a smile on my face as I made my way through the compound towards the banquet hall, just like Seth wanted.

A small part of me loathed myself for being so weak and giving in to what he wanted, but I knew it was best for everyone's safety.

A loud shout cut through the air, calling the attention of everyone in the vicinity. I quickened my pace, my heart pounding. What if Seth had found out about Heka? Or any of the other spies in the compound. Both would make him angry beyond belief and someone would pay the price. While I doubted he knew how to kill Heka, he'd still be able to hurt him.

I entered the main courtyard outside the banquet hall to find a small crowd had formed. While some of those closer to Seth seemed to be enjoying themselves, most of those assembled seemed to be a mixture of scared and repulsed.

Seth stood in the middle with his hand outstretched for his foreman to place a whip there.

My stomach tied into knots. A young boy lay on the ground in front of him, quivering in fear.

I looked to the side to find Rhodopis standing beside me, her shoulders tense with the pressure. No doubt she was thinking about her friend who had suffered at Seth's hands.

"What happened?" I asked.

"I don't know," she responded quietly. "Probably nothing. And certainly not something that deserves this." Disgust came through her every word.

A woman rushed forward and tried to step towards the boy, but one of the others caught hold of her and pulled her back. "You can't."

"But..."

"You know what will happen if someone interferes. You'll make it worse for him," her companion said.

I grimaced at the truth. No one could stop Seth once he'd started. He'd turn his wrath on anyone that tried and they'd probably end up dead.

Except that wasn't true. There were exceptions. And I was one of them.

I stepped forward, only for Rhodopis to reach out and stop me.

"Nephthys, no," she whispered.

"Let me."

She searched my face and must have seen something that made it clear I wasn't about to change my mind about this as she ended up just nodding.

"What's his name?"

"Tye. But..."

"Send his mother to get him as soon as Seth is distracted, please."

I didn't wait for her to confirm my request, I knew she'd do it.

I strode into the middle of the courtyard. My heart pounded in my ears but my anger outweighed my fear. I'd turned a blind eye to the things Seth was doing here for too long, and it was time that ended.
